Made In Scotland Gigs - Reception & Born To Be Wide Forum

Date: Thursday 15 August
Time: 17:00-19:00
Location: Fringe Central – Grassmarket Centre, Edinburgh

Within two years of its launch in 2004, Born To Be Wide’s original home, The Venue, closed down with numerous other popular music destinations in the city following. In recent years the local scene has enjoyed a period of stability, but how secure is the future?

As part of the Made In Scotland Gigs programme, founder Olaf Furniss will host a discussion reflecting on the past two decades and how Edinburgh’s diverse music community and audiences, can ensure that the sector thrives. Taking part will be Sneaky Pete’s owner, Nick Stewart and The Skinny’s music editor, Tallah Brash, with audience members encouraged to contribute perspectives.

Gallus

Gallus bottles that sense of anticipation, the idea that anything could happen. Throwing back to the days when responsibilities were few, anticipation was high, and opportunity was around every corner. The band combine the energetic bounce of Sports Team with the tongue-in-cheek running commentary of life in 2022 of Yard Act and the introspection of contemporaries Fontaines D.C.After forming in a pub of the same name, the Glasgow Indie-punks have made their way to the summit of Scotland’s underground music scene.

Comfort

Developing their sound through years of intensive writing and performing in spaces aligned with Glasgow’s queer/punk scene, comfort are a sibling duo consisting of Sean on drums and Natalie as magnetic front-woman, backed by wildly oscillating software synths to create music that is direct and engaging. The confrontational vulnerability inherent in their music reaches for a personal, yet queer liberation within a constrictive society. comfort create music demanding freedom not tolerance – they have reinterpreted the ethos of punk music for the 21st century sending a clear message that they hold no interest in finding a middle ground with bigotry.

Indoor Foxes

Indoor Foxes hail from the heart of Scotland’s capital whose lyrics come from the gut and music from the heart. Starting life as a bedroom pop project created by the multi-talented Martha Barr, the Indoor Foxes sound has grown and evolved along with Barr’s own life. Having a knack for crafting striking melodies in any format, evident in tracks such as ‘Peach Stone’ and ‘Mr Yellow Eyes’ which explore both pop and rock sensibilities, Barr’s captivating vocals are hard-hitting, honest and powerful, it’s tough not to be completely enamoured from the first listen.

Zoe Graham

Zoe Graham writes songs that sound like doing push-ups on the moon: heavy, but with an unmistakably light touch. Hers is a velvet voice, occasionally back-brushed.

Influenced by artists including St Vincent, Kate Bush and Beck, her folkish beginnings sing through in a penchant for story-led songwriting, and a vocal range that spans the delicate and disaster-struck.

She has previously shared stages with artists including Jenny Hval, Lo Moon, Kawala, Kate Nash, Rae Morris, Fatherson & Hamish Hawk – played festivals such as TRNSMT, Belladrum, Stag & Dagger, Celtic Connections and Tenement Trail. In addition to performing live on national TV from TRSNMT Festival, BBC Quay Sessions with Jake Bugg and on BBC Scotland’s new music show TUNE.
